S.C. Becoming Home to Katrina
Evacuees |
COLUMBIA (AP) - South Carolinians are
opening their buildings to evacuees from Hurricane
Katrina.
Public and private groups across the state are
trying to find places to house thousands of people displaced when
the hurricane came ashore along the Gulf Coast on
Monday.
Sixth District Representative Jim Clyburn wants to
house up to five thousand evacuees in empty military housing and
large public buildings like abandoned shopping malls.
But
Clyburn says he can't find a way to get the people to South
Carolina.
In Greenville, city officials say they can house up
to 12-hundred people at the Palmetto Expo Center. |
