Now I'm writing you. You might find these numbers interesting. I was flabbergasted they were so high! I, like so many other government people, also consider it an oxymoron that we can vet these people, when they are arriving with little to no documentation. I also agree with him when he says, "However, the United States cannot be all things to all people, and I also appreciate the concerns of many Americans that some of those given refugee status may have associations with ISIS and pose a threat to our homeland." Excerpt from Senator Scott's Response: Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns with U.S. Refugee Policy and the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq. I cannot effectively govern without the benefit of the views of my constituents and appreciate your continued correspondence. As you may know, the President, with recommendations from Congress, sets a refugee ceiling and regional allocations at the start of each fiscal year. For FY 2015, the refugee ceiling has been set at 70,000 people, of which 33,000 have been allocated to the "Near East/South Asia" region that includes Iraq and Syria. Additionally, there are 2,000 unallocated slots that could also be used for refugees from the current conflicts in the Middle East. Typically, refugees apply for admittance into the United States either through one of our embassies around the world or through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). To be given refugee status, a person must be a member of a distinct group being persecuted (or having reasonable fear of persecution) in their home county. Additionally, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) branch of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) does a thorough screening and background check of all potential refugees. I certainly understand the eagerness to provide assistance and relief to the millions of people who have been displaced from their homes by years of war in Syria and now Iraq. However, the United States cannot be all things to all people, and I also appreciate the concerns of many Americans that some of those given refugee status may have associations with ISIS and pose a threat to our homeland. Moving forward, I believe that USCIS must do everything they can to ensure that those admitted to the United States are not a risk to this great nation. Rest assured, as decisions continue to be made about the potential for future threats both foreign and domestic, I will remain actively engaged in the debate and will keep your concerns in mind should any pertinent legislation come to the Senate floor for a vote. (Keep in mind our government is borrowing money to do this. We owe a fortune to China alone.): Excerpt: Our government leads the world in contributions to the Syrian crisis, having given $4.5 billion to assist those in need. We have also significantly increased the number of refugees we will admit to the United States, including Syrians. And we continue to work tirelessly towards the political solution that will bring the bloodshed to an end and allow displaced Syrians to return home, as so many wish to do.
