Former President Bush will be in Florence today at a GOP fund-raiser to campaign for Rep. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.

The benefit is part of South Carolina Republican Party Victory 2004 to be held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Eddie Floyd of Florence. GOP delegate Charlie Appleby said Bush’s visit sends a clear message to voters.

“George Bush has always been very popular in South Carolina,” he said. “It shows me that the White House is solidly behind Jim DeMint and has confidence in the people of South Carolina to vote for him.”

Katon Dawson, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, agreed. “South Carolina really loves the Bush family,” Dawson said. “His visit Tuesday is great news for all South Carolina Republicans.”

DeMint also took part in arranging Bush’s visit.

“Former President Bush is a real American patriot,” he said. “Throughout his career he has always been dedicated to preserving the best of our traditional American values. His strong character and leadership have set a wonderful example for all of us.”
