Help 'map' state's future Have a good idea to make state government operate more effectively or at less expense? Take it up with the MAP Commission today. MAP is short for Management, Accountability and Performance, all of which the commission is interested in improving, as it heads to a Sept. 30 deadline for making recommendations to Gov. Mark Sanford. As commission Chairman Ken Wingate notes, in a column today on our Commentary page, the governor modeled the panel after the Grace Commission, which recommended billions in savings to the federal government during the Reagan administration. The MAP Commission's recommendations will be key to the reorganization plan for state government that Gov. Sanford will present to the Legislature. While the commission is interested in observations of government employees, it correctly views the general public as the arbiter of how well state government operates. It also recognizes that those served by state government may have suggestions for how government can do a better job. The MAP Commission will hold a hearing from 5-7 tonight at the student center at Trident Technical College. Give the commission the benefit of your ideas.
