COLUMBIA -- House lawmakers want to know what you think of the state Department of Transportation.

Wednesday morning, the House Department of Transportation Study Committee will hear from members of the public about the giant agency and the state's road system.

"I think it's very important we hear what the people believe we need to know about DOT," said Rep. Annette Young, a Summerville Republican who chairs the committee. "I know we've had calls from people who have had interactions with DOT that are not very favorable. We've had calls from people who have had good reactions to DOT. We want to hear it all."

Young's committee is one of three legislative panels examining the agency following a Legislative Audit Council report last month that alleged DOT wasted millions of dollars, mismanaged contracts and violated state and federal laws.

The hearing will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Room 101 of the Blatt Building on the Statehouse grounds. Speakers will be asked to confine their remarks to about five minutes to allow everyone to speak.

Anyone who wants to address the committee but cannot be present Wednesday can write or email the panel, at 308C Blatt Building, Columbia, SC 29211 or ADYoung@statehouse.net
