Same-Sex Marriage Controversy |
(Columbia-AP) -- South Carolina already has a law banning same-sex marriages, but some lawmakers are scrambling to avoid having to recognize such unions performed in other states.
A recent Massachusetts court ruling paves the way for same-sex marriages in that state as early as May.
Typically states are required to recognize public acts, records and court proceedings of other states. But some 50 state lawmakers are signing a bill that would prohibit marriage benefits for gay couples.
Gay rights activists say they are hopeful the state will soon recognize same-sex marriages. Bert Easter is the president of the South Carolina Gay and Lesbian Pride Movement.
Easter says his intention is to get married in Columbia and hopes that can happen in a few years. His group is sponsoring a town hall meeting next Wednesday to discuss a challenge to the state's ban on gay marriage.
Lawmakers have scheduled a news conference a day earlier. |
