ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Two officers have been honored for heroism in a standoff at a home that left two Abbeville County officers dead last year.
Highway Patrol Cpl. Steve Slueder and state Probation, Pardon and Parole agent Ed Strickland were surprised Wednesday and awarded the American Police Hall of Fame's Silver Star for Bravery.
The honor is the highest award granted to a living officer whose act of courage placed his or her life in danger above and beyond the call of duty.
The officers were commended for their actions on Dec. 8 when they responded to a report of shots being fired at a home on Highway 72 in Abbeville County. The men assisted Constable Donnie M. Ouzts, who had been shot. Ouzts later died of his injuries.
