This was an unprecedented event that no one could have predicted the severity of its aftermath. The media and public always seem to second guess the way things are handled in these types of situations, but it is easy to criticize if you have none of the responsibility. This is a simple Thank You to all involved and who are going to be involved over the long haul. It took a great team to pull off a near impossible feat of minimizing property damage and loss of life during this horrendous statewide catastrophe. I realize that I addressed this letter to two individuals specifically, but I believe that they were influential in coordinating efforts of multiple entities across Columbia and the surrounding areas. Please read this letter in its entirety because I also have a suggestion that may help. I am technical by nature and understand the complexity of regulation of complex systems. Systematic release of water dam systems was a huge responsibility and the workers in those areas and fields should be commended as well. I believe this systematic approach was the key to the success that we have had had so far. I realize we are still in lean up phase and the flooding continues as the water goes down to the lower rivers and lakes but with no more incoming weather, it is a bit easier to control. The one suggestion I would like to make is mass coordination of the Sanitation Division as I am sure you already have on your agendas. This announcement on social media as well as news channels would go a long way in repairing the psychological damage of the individuals affected. I believe seeing construction debris disappear from homes affected gives a sense of pride that things are moving forward. This debris will also house rats, snakes and can be a site for infestation if not reacted to quickly. Nails sticking out and sharp edges also pose a threat to young children. My wife Kindra and I are from Charleston, SC as well as our immediate families and were victims of Hurricane Hugo in September of 1989. I use the term victims loosely in that we had an apartment and very meager beginnings. Both immediate families had large amounts of damage and loss of property. A lot of people, lost more than us but the emotional toll of seeing your city crumble before your very eyes is heart wrenching. I can see this is affecting you as well but you are handling it with a great degree of professionalism and planning as well as communication. Thank you very much for your efforts to date. It's going to be a long process but I feel that we have the right people at the steering wheel. Please contact me if I or my family can be of any assistance.
