(Columbia) - The
Department of Social Services is sitting on more than a
million dollars, some of which could belong to you.
DSS
says the money comes from child support payments that never
made it to the parent.
The problem lies with a list of
names that the agency can’t find a correct address
for.
You’d think that anyone on a list of unclaimed
funds would jump at the chance to claim them, but mother
Lesley Adamson didn’t even know it existed.
We did some
digging, and clued her into the DSS website that lists who is
owed money, but somehow didn’t get it.
“I'm living off
of limited funds, so it’s very important, it might be very
important for a lot of people,” says Adamson.
Nearly
5,700 people have between $25 and $5,000 dollars waiting for
them. And Lesley’s share of the $1.2 Million dollar pot could
make things easier for her and her four children.
“That
really helps a lot with a lot of us, especially single parents
that just really depend on that,” Adamson says.
Lesley
was told she’d have to fax over a copy of her license, social
security card, and recent bill.
She’s optimistic about
some extra money, but wishes this wouldn’t have happened in
the first place.
“It’s frustrating. That someone can
call you out of the blue and say ‘do you know about this and
it’s out there’ and the people supposed to be working on your
case for you, don't even know anything about it,” Adamson
says.
DSS says undeliverable funds must work their way
through the court system before ending up on the list, and
right now the Internet is the only place to access that
information.
If you think there’s money waiting for
you, go to the
DSS website.
