(Columbia-AP) Dec. 11, 2003 - Some state legislators
are questioning Governor Mark Sanford's motives in a
poll that pits him against lawmakers.
Sanford is working on a state budget linked closely
to his government restructuring agenda and needs
legislators to support his agenda.
The poll touched on Statehouse races next year. Some
lawmakers are questioning how the questions are phrased.
The poll asked 500 registered voters if they would
prefer to elect someone "who will help Governor Mark
Sanford bring about changes to state government" or if
they would prefer someone who will oppose the governor.
Voters said by 73 percent to 15 percent they
preferred a legislator who would help Sanford.
House Republican Majority Leader Rick Quinn says the
questions make it appear that Sanford is running against
the General Assembly.
