Barrett Appointed to International Relations Committee
Washington, DC - This afternoon Congressman Gresham Barrett (SC, 3) announced his appointment to the House International Relations Committee. He will serve on the Subcommittee on International Terrorism and Non-proliferation, as well as the Subcommittee on Europe and Emerging Threats.
"Our nation faces difficult and unique challenges today. There is no doubt that we do not live in the same world we did just a few years ago," said Barrett. "I look forward to working closely with Chairman Hyde and my colleagues on the Committee to handle these new and emerging threats."
The House International Relations Committee is responsible for oversight and legislation related to national security developments as it relates to foreign policy, the deployment and use of United States Armed Forces, arms control and disarmament issues, international law enforcement issues, as well as matters related to international economic policy and trade.
This committee assignment is a natural fit for Congressman Barrett. After graduating from The Citadel in 1983, Barrett completed U.S. Army Airborne School and accepted a commission as Second Lieutenant in the First Calvary Division as a Field Artillery Officer. Before resigning his commission as Captain in 1987, Barrett served as an Executive Officer in a Critical Nuclear duty position under the provisions of the Nuclear Surety Program. In addition, a Department of Energy (DOE) industrial complex that processes and stores nuclear materials in support of the national defense and U.S. nuclear non-proliferation efforts, the Savannah River Site (SRS), is located within Congressman Barrett's district. The SRS is a leader on non-proliferation issues and in the production of nuclear materials for and maintenance of our nation's nuclear deterrent.
