I have just read an article about the Headley family from Spartanburg, whose children were removed form their home last year and abused while in state custody. I am a resident of Aiken county, and I am a mother so this hit very close to home. I haven't been able to get this family off my mind, and I find it so disturbing that I am writing to you in hopes that you can do something to help them, and prevent other families from going through the same thing. As a mother it's terrifying to know that in this state, children can be taken from loving, caring, and by all accounts good parents. It has shocked me to see how easily social services can break up an entire family and I had no idea this was possible in SC until reading their story. It has made national news and it doesn't reflect well on our state, particularly because the foster home (Epworth Children's Home) is being compensated for the children being kept in their custody and abused. I'm asking you to call for a full investigation into this case and a reform for how situations like this are handled in the future. Please, please think of these babies, who have been away from their home and family and in a group home with strangers for over a year, and the hell they are having to endure. I have a five year old myself and it is just beyond my comprehension. My heart breaks for this family and I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through. PLEASE stand up for the Headley family.
