House budget chairman pushes sales tax increase to end car tax, limit home tax

(Columbia-AP) Dec. 10, 2003 -- The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says he has a way to end car taxes and limit future home tax increases.

Representative Bobby Harrell says he can generate enough money to do that by increasing the state's sales tax by a penny on the dollar and eliminating some exemptions from the tax.

Harrell says the changes would bring a new source of support to state schools. The proposal would send more money to public schools from tourists while giving South Carolinians a tax cut.

He says his plan generates more than $500 million by raising the sales tax.
