For nearly 400 years, the sweetgrass basketmaking has remained a visible part of the lowcountry.

With the help of a group of lowcountry 3rd graders, that is never going to change.

Third grade students at Belle Hall Elementary came up with the idea that the state of south carolina needed a symbol, and felt the sweetgrass basket would be perfect.

"This is really a story of creativity on behalf of a number of stduents over at belle hall.

How they reminded all of us in south carolina on the impact of tradition.

The impact of uniquness.

The impact of creativity, "said Governor Mark Sanford (website - news) .

Sanford signed a bill that makes the student's request official.

Sanford also says when political leaders visit the state in the future, they will be given sweetgrass baskets.
