GREENVILLE, S.C. - Businessman Hayne Hipp spent
nearly $250,000 in his unsuccessful challenge to unseat Greenville
County Council Vice Chairman Scott Case, according to the campaign's
final disclosure report.
Hipp raised $126,500 in contributions and loaned his campaign
$160,800 for the Republican primary, according to the report filed
with the state Ethics Commission.
He repaid $64,500 of the loan and spent $222,800, according to
the report. That would be about $88 for each of the 2,523 votes he
received.
"It was a wonderful investment," said Hipp, chief executive of
media company Liberty Corp.
Case said he will file his report by the July 10 deadline.
Case got 3,967 votes in the June 8 primary. Case said he spent
about $40,000, or about $10 for each of his votes.
"I knew from the outset that I would be out spent and in this
case, almost 10 to 1," Case said. "But it goes to show that voters
are not easily fooled."
