Griping about gas
reaches governors
From Staff and Wire
Reports
Around the nation Friday, governors were grappling with
complaints from consumers about price gouging at the pumps.
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue said he would sign an executive order
to suspend state motor fuel taxes through September.
In the Carolinas, governors rejected such a move, as the rush to
the pumps seemed to have slowed some and more gas was being sent
through the pipelines supplying much of the Southeast.
S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford has urged residents to restrict gas use,
but a spokesman said there was no evidence that gas stations were
engaging in price gouging.
N.C. Gov. Mike Easley has called on residents to conserve fuel,
but has not suspended the tax on fuel.
Meanwhile, leaders in several other states either have proposed —
or said they are considering — temporarily lifting gas taxes. |
