Some Surprises On South Carolina Primary Night

Two Greenville County Council Incumbents Defeated

While Tuesday's primary elections mostly came out the way many expected, a few surprise victories kept the night interesting, including a pair of victories that guarantee some changing faces in the Greenville County Council.

Greenville County Council Chairwoman Phyllis Henderson and Councilman Dozier Brooks were both upset in their races by Jim Burns and Butch Kirven, respectively. Councilman Steve Selby will face off with Tony Trout in a runoff in two weeks.

In a very expensive Greenville County Council race, Councilman Scott Case defeated businessman Hayne Hipp. Hipp spent more than $100,000 on the election.

In the 10th Circuit Solicitor's race, Assistant Solicitor Chrissy Adams defeated Solicitor Druanne White by less than 1,000 votes, while the South Carolina Senate District 12 race will most likely face a recount as John Hawkins held a 29-vote lead over Lee Bright.

Former Gov. David Beasley easily made the expected runoff for the Republican nomination for Sen. Fritz Hollings' seat, but Rep. Jim Demint and Thomas Ravenel were neck and neck for the second runoff position, with Demint holding a slight lead to take the second runoff position.

Almost immediately after the polls closed, Inez Tennenbaum was declared the U.S. Senate Democratic nominee over Ben Frasier.

Results from Union, Pickens and Spartanburg counties were initially delayed due to computer problems.

State election officials said turnout was reportedly heavier in the Upstate than in the Midlands and Lowcountry.

Other races that will be decided in a runoff in two weeks include:
  • Anderson County Council District 4
  • Anderson Co. Sheriff (GOP)
  • Greenville Co. Register of Deeds (GOP)
  • Pickens Co. Council District 3 (GOP)
  • Pickens Co. Council District 4 (GOP)
  • Pickens Co. Council District 6 (GOP)
  • Spartanburg Co. Sheriff (GOP)
  • Union Co. Council District 3 (Dem)
  • Union Co. Council District 5 (Dem)
  • Union Co. Sheriff (Dem)
  • S.C. Senate District 3 (GOP)
