Columbia, S. C. - In a letter to legislators today, Governor Jim Hodges urged the General Assembly to reject plans to raid the state retirement fund.
"We cannot betray the hardworking people of South Carolina by raiding their retirement," Hodges said. "This is an unacceptable option. During these tough economic times, we must assure South Carolinians their retirement benefits are safe. "
Following is a copy of the Governor's letter.

The Honorable David H. Wilkins
Speaker
South Carolina House of Representatives
508 Blatt Building
Columbia, South Carolina 29211
Dear Mr. Speaker and Members of the House:
Before the House of Representatives is a provision to reduce funding to pension plans for teachers, police officers and other state employees. I urge you to withdraw this provision.
During these tough economic times, we must be more determined than ever to meet the priorities of our citizens, but we cannot betray the hardworking people of South Carolina. The passage of such a provision could jeopardize future benefits, including cost-of-living increases, for thousands of retirees. I urge you to pursue a more responsible alternative to meeting our health insurance obligation.
Assure our citizens that their retirement is safe by withdrawing this provision.
Sincerely,
Jim Hodges
