Special Tobacco Farmer Tour to discuss Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus
SANDY BAY---Tobacco growers interested in the dreaded tomato spotted wilt virus are invited to attend a special tobacco tour beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2002, at the Milton Parrot Farm in the Sandy Bay Community of Williamsburg County.
Tomato spotted wilt virus can invade a variety of crops including tobacco. Dr. Bruce Fortnum, pathologist, and others have worked hard to help combat the problem. Dr. Albert Johnson, a researcher at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center, has developed a variety demonstrating resistance to the wilt. Comments from these two scientists and the tour of the plots will be well worth the time for South Carolina tobacco farmers.
The tour will be held at one of the best tobacco demonstration sites in the state. A meal will be provided following the field visit. The tour, touted as a very good investment of time for tobacco growers, is designed so that farmers can come directly from their fields, review the results, have supper, and go home.
From Lake City, follow U.S. 52 towards Kingstree 2.7 miles past Cades, SC, to CR 44/McCutcheon Road. Turn right on McCutcheon Road. Travel 5.8 miles to the Clemson Demonstration site which will be on the left near McCutcheons store.
From Kingstree, follow S.C. 527 for 5.6 miles to CR 248/McCutcheon Road. Turn right on McCutcheon Road. Follow McCutcheon Road for 2.2 miles to Clemson Demonstration on the right after crossing CR 47 at McCutcheons Store.
