Schools start early in the year preparing for the next year and when lawmakers decide to make changes in the middle of the year this is harmful to students. Please remember your laws impact students! One example is one stating all 11th grade students will take Work Keys. Some students are wheelchair bound, unable to speak and have significant cognitive deficits. It is unrealistic to have them to complete this assessment. Have you visited classes with these types of students? *students who are currently enrolled and scheduled to graduate in 2015-16? * the loss of jobs and the effect on the economy of Orangeburg and the domino effect on suppliers, etc.? *the amount of money we give to other public universities for stadiums and non-academic expenses when this involves the education of students? Eckstrom stated the only students who go to SC State are ones who cannot enter other universities. I hope you do not share this sentiment and will look at the number of successful graduates of this institution. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of the closing of this institution which has likely already been damaged by the timing of this announcement. There are probably many students who were planning to enroll who will not do so after this announcement. I am sure there are ways to help the University without closing it and we should have enough intelligent lawmakers to come up with a solution along with the staff of SC State University.
