Prosecutor Trey Gowdy wants the state's drunken driving laws changed so punishments depend on how much the driver had to drink.
Gowdy's proposal would keep the current penalties for drivers whose blood-alcohol content ranges from the current legal limit of point-oh-eight percent to point-twelve.
But sentences would become more severe as blood-alcohol levels increase.
Gowdy says he has the support of House Speaker Pro Tem Doug Smith of Spartanburg.
The idea came after a review of fatal D-U-I wrecks showed the vast majority of them in Gowdy's circuit involved drivers whose blood-alcohol level tested point-thirteen percent or more.
