Businesswoman named to S.C. State trustee

(Published June 23‚ 2003)

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Mark Sanford has appointed a businesswoman to the South Carolina State University Board of Trustees.

Martha Scott Smith, BellSouth's state director of corporate and external affairs, attended the university before graduating from the University of South Carolina.

"She's a proven business leader with a real vision for making South Carolina State University the best it can be," Sanford said.

She was the first black female to serve as the chairwoman of the board of directors of the central South Carolina chapter of the American Red Cross. She currently serves on a number of boards, including the South Carolina State Museum Foundation and the Midlands Technical College Foundation.
