I'm of Middle Eastern decent. My sisters and I were born in the United States while my mother and father were born in the Middle East. My father went to college and PhD. school in the U.S. I graduated from Lexington High School in 1990. On a regular basis from the 9th grade until we graduated, Jay Koon would call me a sand nigger. It was almost a daily occurrence as it was a combination of Ahab the Arab the sand nigger or the sand nigger Ahab the Arab. It didn't really bother me as I got used to it very quickly and it helped so that when people say such things now like towel head or rag head or sand nigger or one of many other slurs and insults I can let it roll off my back. I know it's not popular being a Muslim or of Middle Eastern decent and I stand up as an American but it doesn't change the fact that Jay Koon has some racial bias instilled in him. I chose to write to you not only because you are the Governor but you lived in Lexington and I have a feeling you have seen first hand what is business as usual here, that sometimes it's about who you know. I can tell you without a doubt there are police officers that carry some bias towards Middle Easterners and Muslims and probably towards other groups as well. Lexington county is miles away from cleaning up the corruption and the good ole boy network that has been a way of doing things for many years. Racism and bigotry really is unacceptable anywhere in this day and age. Leadership has been lacking in Lexington and I hope things change soon in Lexington by electing leaders we can trust. I really don't expect you to do anything based on a letter but at least I told someone about Jay Koon. Concernedinlexington@outlook.com
