Bannister wins bid to replace Wilkins

Greenville voters chose Bruce Bannister Tuesday as the Republican nominee in the race to fill former House Speaker David Wilkins' seat.

Bannister had 2,637 votes to William Herlong's 1,325 in the runoff election, giving Bannister a 67 percent to 33 percent win, The Greenville News reported in its Wednesday editions. Both men are lawyers in Greenville.

Bannister will face Democrat Michelle Shain, a Greenville City Council member and president of public affairs firm, in the Oct. 4 special election to serve the 15 months remaining in Wilkins' term.
