I am white but have long been bothered by the continued use of the Confederate flag. I always associated it with racism despite the comments that it represents honoring ancestors. It also bothers me because the Civil War began because of secession of the Southern states from the United States. The North won the war and the South rejoined the United States. It always struck me as unpatriotic when people flew the Confederate flag, as if their hearts were not totally with the United States. I hope that now that the Confederate flag will not have government sanction, that SC and all states can work to end racism and discrimination in employment, housing and voting.
