Florence outdoor education trail opening, dedication set for April 14

People throughout the Pee Dee are invited to slip on their hiking shoes and enjoy a day of family fun, fresh air, and breath-taking views at the public opening of the Outdoor Education Trail, located at Clemson University’s Pee Dee Research and Education Center on Pocket Road in Florence. This free event, scheduled from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, will provide a rare opportunity to tour one of South Carolina’s newest and most unique educational facilities.

A short dedication will also be held during the afternoon. John Kelly, Clemson University vice president for public service and agriculture, and Breck Carmichael, deputy director of the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), will be the keynote speakers. In addition to the learning centers, the opening will include wildlife displays, live animals, equipment demonstrations, trailer rides, and will feature a nature walk with Rudy Mancke, renowned naturalist and star of the television show “Nature Scene.”

The Outdoor Education Trail runs along the scenic 150-acre Dargan’s Pond and features a series of learning centers focused on the many natural resources that can be found in agricultural, forest, lake, wetland, and urban ecosystems. The trail is informative to young and old alike and has been visited by thousands during the past year. The theme for this year’s event will be “Merging People with Their Environment.”
