I have personally been an advocate of helping to educate people about this bill because I am a Mother of a recovering heroin addict. I have seen too many kids die, seen too many families lose all they have trying to pay rehab for children addicted to substances such as heroin and or opiates. I wish I could be public with my story but my son who is 9 mon clean is not ready for this yet. So, I help where I can, and I know this bill would decrease our states overdose deaths if you can please pass this bill. ADDICTION IS AN EPEDEMIC AND IT IS HERE IN SMALL TOWN SC, AND WILL INCREASE IF WE CAN NOT DO SUCH SIMPLE ACTS AS STOP ALLOWING CARTELS TO OPERATE IN OUR STATE. I corresponded with Captain Andrew Lewis and Bill Knowles both who uncovered this corruption through sound investigation. I wrote legislators, friends and spoke to as many people as possible because I personally could not comprehend why our state would allow supporting Cartels and terrorist groups by not tracking these wire transfers. I will share my story with you personally anytime but I assure you I am among thousands of SC Mothers who have lived the nightmare of addiction of a child or spouse or friend as well as the long road for holding onto hope for recovery. Many families have lost children and many are paralyzed from lack of a voice to change the stigma of addiction, get better treatment and most certainly to affect the illegal operations of drug trafficking into our State. It is a global problem but the solutions begin in our homes, coming together to fight this epidemic. My son was dean's list bio-technology Senior at Clemson University. He was a heroin addict; he will always be in recovery yet relapse is part of this disease. He is 9 months clean, 1 course left to graduate, yet lost his desire from shame I think. It is no different than cancer but society blames people with addiction through attitudes of moral shame and blame .I know for sure No Mother of an addict ever runs out of tears, nor no child ever wants to grow up to be an addict! Please pass this BILL without any hesitation or influence from lobbyist who I know are powerful. I personally have knocked on drug dealer's doors to let them know if I had to face a funeral of my son, I would hold them accountable. I have seen dealers in my driveway telling me after I chased them that I need not worry because they shot up my son the first time so he would not overdose. That was after his short period in rehab, a relapse. That dealer was the son of a doctor in Columbia. This is how far a Mom will go, it is insane but we are Mothers. Some are wives, sisters or brothers, yet the effects of addiction are far reaching and unless you have lived this it is hard to really understand. All I know is I will do my part, educate, pray and be as much as an advocate as I possibly can. Thank you and I am available anytime if you want to hear this personally. It is a very real problem in SC and we must do all we can to stop the flow of illegal drugs and also help LE who risk their lives daily fighting the crime that comes from drug use and trafficking. Please pass this BILL swiftly. Sincerely, Mary Stewart 803.238.9168
