Gov. Sanford Faces Voice Of The Voter

News Channel 7
Monday, October 6, 2003

A lot of people in the Upstate don't like where our state government is headed.

Governor Mark Sanford Administration's own survey shows about 52% of people in this area are supportive. So, Governor Sanford is now touring the Upstate.

We caught up with the Governor while he was meeting with workers at Dieco, which creates the designs for coerrogeaded box labels. He invited us to ride with him as he headed to his next event in Greer.

Sanford told us, "It gives you real world pulse if you will for what's happening in the upstate and what's on people's minds."

Compared with other governors across the nation, Sanford is a weak one because in South Carolina the lesiglature weels enormous power and one voter had a big problem with that while meeting Sanford on the tour.

"david gowing/voter-"We originally came from Virginia and in Virginia the governor office has a lot more power and it seems to run pretty efficiently." David Growing told us as we followed the governor.

Governor Sanford responded, "tell David we need his help i totally agree with what David is saying."

Sanford will push hard next year when the legislator meetings to get more authority.

"Make it not about my term in office make it about the next guy. In other words it isn't about me it is about having a functioning executive branch that works."

Of course, any time you talk to voters taxes will come up. Sanford claims his plan to lower the incomes tax would create more jobs and small businesses, and that's his first priority.
