RIDGELAND - The Jasper County Election Commission is calling on the governor to set a date for a new Jasper school board election.

The S.C. Election Commission last month upheld the Jasper commission's determination that a new District 6 election should be held after problems with the Nov. 2 tally were raised.

Challenger Mike Hubbard protested incumbent Andrea Smallwood's 14-vote victory on the grounds that 16 votes from the Okatie Precinct should not have been cast.

"Let's get this out as soon as possible so we can get this thing going," Commissioner Donald Sheftall said.

The commission Thursday called on its director and attorney to send a letter to the governor's officer requesting an election date be set.

While the state commission OK'd the new election, it is up to the governor's office to decide when it will be held.

Plagued by a number of election inconsistencies and controversies over the years, Jasper officials hope to take steps to alleviate some of their problems in time for the new school board election.

One way officials hope to do that is through a countywide update of their voter information records.

Incorrect addresses stymied the November election and resulted in a sea of complaints from across the rural county.

The commissioners will meet this month to review the registration books and start a mass mailing of change-of-address forms, which will be sent to each of the county's more than 13,000 registered voters.

Several residents complained in November that they couldn't vote in their local districts.

Across the board, those errors can be chalked up to a conflict in address information, Elections Director Jeanine Buckner said.

"This is a priority," said Commissioner Eugene Hicks, "and we should focus on District 6 so we don't have any problems in that election."
