(Lexington) March 23, 2005 - Advocates are hoping
that any day now, legislators will take a look at a bill
they believe will cut down on violence against
women.
The legislation has been side-tracked for weeks, and
some fear it may not see the light of day, while daily
cases like one in a Lexington County court transpire.
A woman who asked not to be identified spoke with WIS
about an ongoing case, "I've had to hide from him. I've
had to leave my home. I've had to lie in my bed at
night. Can't sleep. I just don't want this court to have
mercy on him because he means what he says and he says
he is going to kill me."
She says she has been intimidated and that her life
has been threated. She says our court system is a
revolving door when it comes to domestic violence, "He
made promises after promises to judge after judge and he
broke every single one."
Brad Craft has been charged before in regards to his
ex-wife with acts like breaking into her home and
breaking restraining orders. Craft was sentenced to 90
days, and when he got out, on the day he was released,
she says he burglarized her home.
She again went into hiding. That's when her father
says Craft called him and threatened his daughter's
life. He recorded the conversation, "I'm after --- and
blood now. Until someone cools me off, until we work
this out, it's going to get bad."
Carft turned himself in. He's been in jail three
years awaiting trial, and now he's decided to plead
guilty to multiple charges.
If Craft was sentenced consecutively he'd be in jail
for around 50 years. Realistically, her attorneys say
he'll be out in five, "I have five years to live in
peace. After that I don't know. My life may never be
peaceful again."
