Last year 45 states declared their own state Pollinator Week. With your help, we hope to reach 100% state participation this year. The popularity and public enthusiasm for Pollinator Week has been overwhelming. In 2015 we can continue to build on the tremendous success of this movement with your involvement. I am writing to ask your support in helping to protect pollinating animals, which are vital to our food supply, economy, and a key to global sustainability, by declaring South Carolina Pollinator Week," June 15-21, 2015. One recommendation of the landmark National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council study, Status of Pollinators in North America, was an immediate increase in public awareness of the vital roles pollinators play in our lives. By declaring Pollinator Week in South Carolina, you will be helping to do exactly that. In just eight years, Pollinator Week has become an international celebration of the invaluable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles. The growing concern for pollinators is a sign of progress, but it is vital that we continue to maximize our collective effort. Visit www.pollinator.org for more information about events surrounding Pollinator Week and to see Selecting Plants for Pollinators, an unprecedented series of pollinator-friendly bioregional planting guides, available free of charge and designed to assist everyone from gardeners to public land managers in choosing plants to support pollinators. Establishing pollinator friendly plantings can increase production of crops and other flowering plants, provide important resources for wildlife, maintain natural ecosystems, and reduce the need for chemical control of pest species. Together, we are changing the future and challenging all sectors of our economy to work together. Pollinator Partnership's S.H.A.R.E. (Simply Have Areas Reserved for the Environment) program is inspiring and connecting habitat for the benefit of pollinators. Our BeeSmartT campaign is connecting youth to their food sources and the outdoors. We are working, with your help, to ensure the well-being of current and future generations. Please consider joining this movement to protect one of the foundations of life that has been largely ignored. A sample proclamation can be downloaded at http://pollinator.org/npw_action.htm. Thank you for supporting the great state of South Carolina and its citizens through your advocacy for pollinators. Sincerely, Evan Cole Pollinator Week Coordinator
