(Columbia-AP) April 4, 2006 -
A House education subcommittee has approved a bill to
require all new textbooks in South Carolina to
incorporate critical analysis.
The bill is the latest tactic in the debate over how
to teach evolution in high school biology classes.
The panel voted three to two Monday to change a
Senate bill on selecting instructional materials. The
new version directs the State Board of Education to
approve only textbooks that "emphasize critical thinking
and analysis in each academic content."
The Education Oversight Committee and the Board of
Education have been at an impasse over evolution
standards.
The oversight committee wants to require educators to
teach students to "critically analyze" evolution. The
state board refused, saying that would weaken the
state's science curriculum.
