COLUMBIA, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford plans to
ride his bicycle from Aiken to Columbia as part of his effort to
encourage South Carolinians to exercise more.
The governor is promising a free lunch at the Gov.'s Mansion for
those who complete the 60-mile Oct. 9 ride. But it won't be barbecue
or fried chicken. The governor will serve a healthy meal,
gubernatorial spokesman Joel Sawyer said.
Sanford rode from Spartanburg to Charleston over three weekends
last year.
"This is just one more way we hope to encourage people to be a
bit more active in their day-to-day lives," Sanford said.
It should be an easy ride for avid bikers, said John Green, owner
of Cycle Center.
Those who can keep up with the main pack will have a police
escort.
There was only one minor injury among the hundreds of people who
rode last year. One rider fell while crossing some railroad
tracks.
Water and snacks will be provided at several checkpoints. The
governor's office asks participants to register at http://www.scgovernor.com/ to
help plan for the provisions.
