Mathews (18) was diagnosed with Schizophrenia last year (2015) around the month of April. For someone too young to be diagnosed with a mental illness of this magnitude it is too much to absorb. He is still in what is called "anosognosia" process, situation, moment. It is painful, it is scary, I fear for his life and my daughter and myself life. My question is why people that has substance abuse (drug and alcohol) has better treatment and are taking more seriously into consideration. There are programs out there and they are allow to stay "tup to th "thirty days" as an inpatient status. I need answers, resources, I want to be able to create awareness and be that voice and actually voice out what families, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, niece, nephews, friends, mothers, fathers, grandparents are struggling with on a daily basis with the stigma that has been there for years and the mental system is just not providing the right treatment or they do not have the specialists to treat mental illness like schizophrenia. I called 911 (1/4/16) because my son was in crisis and they took "30 minutes to come to my house" and they were just making fun of what my son was talking about. This was totally disrespectful. Unfortunately police officers are not trained to deal with persons that are affected by mental illness and this is also scary because I do not want my son to be killed by the police. I called and send some information to the Continuum of Care to see if My son will qualified for him to be able to be admitted to a "Residential Facility" where He can stay a little longer that in one of these behavioral hospitals where they do not even offer family support groups. I will continue to advocate and do the best I can for my son to get the appropriate care with the right specialists in mental health. At times I feel hopeless and desperate and just keep my faith and pray to God to guide us, give us wisdom and protect us. Thanks for your attention. Any help with any mental health resource will be greatly appreciated. I am not rich. I work as a MSFW Program Representative (Pee Dee Area). I always like helping others in need and always strive to do my best. Sincerely, Ana Moreno
