Dear Writing Awards Coordinator:

        Thank you for your willingness to serve as the coordinator for your district.  We are excited about sponsoring the Lt. Governor's Writing Awards Program once again.  You are a valuable part of this program and we appreciate your efforts in making it a success.

        An extension of the Writing Awards Program was added five years ago, the Lt. Governor's Young Writers' Summer Workshop, and will again be offered this year.  During the month of June, all district winners are invited to attend a tuition-free workshop in Columbia.  The workshop is designed to improve and enhance the writing skills of our young writers.  In addition, the students will meet with some of South Carolina's top professional writers and learn more about the exciting career opportunities available to writers.

Enclosed in the packet are the following items needed to implement the program:

•         2001 Writing Awards Schedule and Procedures
•         Fifth and Eighth Grade Topics
•         Grading Outline
•         Writing Awards Score Chart
•         Judging Criteria
•         Award Levels

        In addition to the guidelines, the fifth and eighth grade forms A - D, are enclosed and need to be completed and returned to the Lt.
