In the wake of Hurricane Alex, state officials are not
taking any chances. Governor Mark Sanford met with state
agencies to ensure the state is prepared for a hurricane.
Sanford says preparation is the key. We did not get hit by
Alex but the season is far from over and if we do get hit by a
hurricane, the governor says he wants the state to be
prepared. Hurricane season is a serious threat that the
governor and other state leaders are not taking lightly.
Before a storm hits, they are making sure the state is as
ready as possible.
Col. Dale Ellenburg with the South Carolina national guard
says, "every meeting that is held we find those little
glitches that we didn't see so that helps us hone our plan."
Hurricane Alex did not cause any major damage in south
carolina but the season is far from over. One of the problem
areas noted, the national guard and the lack of bulldozers...
.
Ellenburg says, "we have 26 bulldozers which 20 are
deployed...leaving only 6 for the national guard to operate
that belong to the national guard...but we are aware that
construction companies and rental companies have these
resources readily available." Forecasters say the state is due
for a hurricane.
Governor sanford says, "you will never be totally prepared
for an event such as an hurricane..you can not cover every
contingency but we are making a best phase effort to make sure
we have covered every contingency." The national guard says
the reason they are lacking is due to soldiers being deployed
overseas. But they say even though equipment is lacking, they
have enough man power and if need be, they would get help from
neighboring states.
