Runoff in Senate District Three race

A field of five was narrowed to three in the battle to replace District 3 State Sen. Bob Waldrep who is retiring after 12 years.

According to unofficial Republican primary results Tuesday night, Chuck Allen and Kevin Bryant will compete in a runoff. Ron Wilson was third.

Allen received 4,867 votes, to Bryant's 4,678 . Wilson received 3,324 votes.

Mike Mullinax won the Democratic nomination with 980 votes, with his opponent Ed Allgood receiving 638 votes

Mullinax said, "I'm very proud and humbled by the confidence paid the people in this community. I think it's a testament to the fact that the tide is turning. I think I can make a better future for my county and this state."

State Senate District 3 covers the areas north and West of Interstate 85.

In other races, former Wren High School teacher and head football coach Jack King lost to incumbent Rep. Dan Cooper.

Cooper won his eighth term in Columbia by defeating King 2,667 to 1,024.

"It's a vote of confidence from the voters," Cooper said Tuesday night. "I appreciate everybody's support and I'll do the best I can in continuing to serve the voters."

There is no Democratic challenger in the race.

In the county council races, incumbent Larry Greer beat out challenger Peggy Taylor for the District 3 seat. Greer received 1,423 votes to Taylor's 895.

In the District 4 race, a field of four was narrowed to two. There will be a runoff June 22 between Bill McAbee and Steve Gibson. McAbee received 1,355 votes and Gibson 995.

In District 7, incumbent Cindy Wilson defeated Bob Austin 1,438 votes to 1,169.
