COLUMBIA - State Highway Patrol Cpl. Nicklous W. King was named trooper of the year for 2005 on Wednesday for helping thwart an attempted suicide.

King responded to a call May 7, 2005, that a man was attempting to jump out in front of vehicles on Interstate 95 in Orangeburg County. Using his crisis training, King was able to talk the individual out of the roadway and stayed with him until emergency personnel arrived at the scene, the patrol said.

King, who began his highway patrol career in 1992, is assigned to a troop headquartered in Orangeburg County.

He is a member of the department's statewide Peer Team, which assists other law enforcement agencies in crisis situations.
