GAY MARRIAGE

South Carolinians will decide next year whether the state constitution should be changed to ban same-sex marriages. On the ballot

COMMON-LAW MARRIAGE

Would repeal a state statute that allows people without a marriage license to receive spousal benefits in some cases. Did not pass

RETIREMENT

A plan to shore up the $25 billion state retirement plan — saving cost-of-living increases while increasing employee contributions — was approved. Awaiting governor’s signature

COCKFIGHTING

People convicted of cockfighting would face larger fines and/or more jail time. Did not pass

DOCTOR COMPLAINTS

The public would have access to formal complaints filed against physicians. Awaiting governor’s signature

DOCTOR IDs

Young residents would have to be identified as such in teaching hospitals under the Lewis Blackman Hospital Patient Safety Act. Awaiting governor’s signature

HOTEL SPRINKLERS

Hotels without sprinkler systems would have to post warning signs. Awaiting governor’s signature
