Best route for all

STATE ROAD BUILDERS have announced a decision that offers encouragement to environmentalists and to those hoping to see I-73 constructed as quickly as possible.

The freeway that will eventually run from the Myrtle Beach area to Michigan remains years from construction. But it now appears that when the work does begin, it will steer clear of the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. The S.C. Department of Transportation says it will not include the refuge in the areas to be studied as a possible route for the multibillion dollar project. That is a victory for those hoping to preserve the area. And eliminating one environmental hurdle could be a victory for those who want the project to move ahead without delay.

Those who oppose road-building in the refuge aren’t breathing a sigh of relief just yet. Secondary roads could be in store for that area of Georgetown County. Some Georgetown boosters are disappointed to see their area lose some of the road’s economic spin-off.

However, preserving natural resources and beauty have proven themselves as economic magnets in other communities. The unspoiled nature of many areas along our coast is worth preserving for residents and visitors alike. The Transportation Department’s announcement represents progress we all can get behind.
