I sent a passionate message that may have offended you to the point of not responding and if that's so then I'm sorry, but it was how I felt. If you however did not get a chance to read it I'll re post after this message. I am not college educated, I'm only 19, but I've learned a lot about the Old South's past through reading historically factual texts during my down time than I believe I ever will when I'm out of the military next month and enrolled in a history program in school. This is a simple proposal to you that I believe would please all. This is the most proud Charlestonian and South Carolinian you'll ever meet begging that you at least bring up the topic of erecting a new flag at the top of the memorial over state house grounds. South Carolina has ALWAYS been a state to stand up against Tyranny. The FIRST to declare independence from a tyrant 3000 miles away, the FIRST to declare independence from a Tyrant just over 300 miles away. When political figures come to South Carolina that is the first thing they need to know. They need to understand South Carolina's freedom of speech is critical to its success as a state. Not politically correct free speech, but all free speech. I hate the Black Panthers. I hate the New NAACP. I Hate the KKK. I hate Neo-Nazis. They have their rights. Let them abuse old flags. Put it in a museum, it's not a South Carolina Confederate flag anyway. However, you can do something to appease both parties. There are three flags that no intellectually sound individual could protest claiming offensive gestures by it. The first option is the South Carolina Sovereignty Flag, which you may or may not have seen before. I would assume you have. It is a red flag with the Palmetto tree and moon in the top left corner, with a blue cross in the middle and the cross is littered with stars. The flag was originally created by Northern Copperheads (Southern Sympathizers, however abolitionists!) over the Alumni Hall at Yale University. In January of 1861. The second flag would be Big Red, the spirit flag of South Carolina from the Citadel. This represents the strong military power of our state and the fighting spirit in which has led so many South Carolinian's to be Successful in their lives. The third flag which I so wholeheartedly suggest, would be the Fort Moultrie flag. It was used in both 1776-81 and 1861-65. The flag itself is blue in color similar to the state flag, differing in the fact that in large letters all across the banner the word LIBERTY is written in capital letters. Above the word LIBERTY in the left hand corner is the crescent moon. This flag is without a doubt a flag to represent freedom to all men. I encourage you to ask the citizens of South Carolina, not the politicians about this proposal of mine. Please, if not for me, just do it for the majority of citizens who cry out to you on Social Media every day to no avail. Please respond to me, even if the answer is no. Thank you. Jacob Kirtley
