Convicted Urine Salesman Heads To Jail

Kenneth Curtis came to the Greenville County courthouse to begin serving his six-month sentence for selling his own urine, but not before one last stunt.

Curtis gave one of his urine kits to Greenville County sheriff's deputies as he arrived for his court hearing around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.

"This is basically urinating on the steps of the courthouse to prove a point and with that I'd like to give you one of my kits," Curtis said.

Curtis was convicted of selling his own urine to defraud urinalysis drug tests in 2001. He's been out of jail since then while the case was being appealed.

Last year, the South Carolina Supreme Court refused to overturn Curtis' conviction.

Curtis said he will spend his time in jail praying.

"I've never given my kits away or sold my kits to anyone who expressed a desire to use them in a test for illegal drugs. I've always used this as a soapbox to stand on to illustrate a point and I've been persecuted for that," Curtis told WYFF News 4's Brad Willis.

Curtis maintains that he sold the kits to make a point about exposing a trend of personal privacy concerns.

After rejecting a request for Curtis to stay out of jail a few more days, Judge Charles Simmons said, "The fat lady has sung. Game's over. It's time for you to serve your sentence."
