Governor Haley: I write in response to your response to my letter about same-sex marriage. As you now, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was struck down by the Supreme Court several years ago, so please stop bringing it up, as if it were still the law of the land. If you remember, it was ruled unconstitutional by the one institution entrusted to protect the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. In addition, please quit masquerading your blatant, unfounded prejudice against gay people as some disingenuous attempt to protect children from the horrors and shortcomings of same-sex parents, when we know that millions of healthy, productive children are the products of same-sex marriages. It is not a question of our being on opposite sides of a political issue, "agreeing to disagree." That kind of condescending rhetoric boils my blood. Maybe you cannot grasp this simple fact: When you are gay, politics are personal (period). It's not like we're disagreeing about a distant policy issue that has no palpable impact on my life. There is one bottom-line here....we gay people pay our taxes, contribute to our communities and in general we conduct ourselves as responsible citizens. As such, you have absolutely no legal, constitutional or moral standing to deny us equal rights, including the right to marry. So stop telling me to sit down, shut up and embrace your persecution in the spirit of democratic compromise! You are on the wrong side of history, and the arc of justice, however slowly it bends...and we are not - that is what matters. It will count soon enough, as early as June of this year, when the Supreme Court rules on this decision. In the near future, it won't matter that you are on the wrong side of history...unfortunately. Politically speaking, it is merely expedient to you...a way of maintaining power, pandering to your base, throwing chum into the waters. I wish you were a real leader. I wish the majority of you were real leaders, but sadly you are incapable of forging popular opinion, only reacting to it. Someday, though it probably does not matter to you, you will be ridiculed as one the many, the distorted and the ignorant who perpetuated tyranny against same-sex couples for your own political gain. That's why you oppose gay marriage and you know it. You could at least stop lying about it. Robert Pfaff Charleston, SC 29412
