All our interstates need to be widened to six lanes (I-20, 26, 77 and 85) from one end to the other, our state and county roads are in desperate need of repair, the problem is money. No one in the house or the state senate wants to get off their collective butts and make the hard decision on where to get the money. I have a two part proposal. First, our current state gas/diesel tax is 16 cent, lets raise this to 20 cent which would put us some where in the middle of all the rest of the states. Second, lets raise the cigarette tax by one dollar. This extra money, 4 cent tax on gas/diesel and the one dollar tax on cigarette can only be used to improve existing roads. I was raised in York county and have seen the mass improvements in the infrastructure since they instituted the pennies for progress tax, I am currently living in Sumter county and seen absolutely no major improvements in the infrastructure since the pennies for progress tax was instituted here. You will have to make sure the money is spent on what it is intended for and none of it ins up in the pockets of politician, or funding elsewhere. Thank You Richard D. Threatt USAF Ret
