S.C. State Museum Facing Tough Times
(Columbia-AP) -- State Museum Director Willie Calloway says his agency is not in crisis. But Calloway says the museum needs help.

The State Museum has half the staff it did about three years ago. Admission fees for some people have increased. Governor Mark Sanford has proposed phasing out state funding.

Calloway says he wants legislators to understand how the educational facility is funded, and how important it is to the state.

Sanford has proposed eliminating about $4.5
million in annual state funding, over the next three years. He says that would free up money for education and health programs.

Museum Commission Chairman Gary Culbreath says he's anxious to see how the legislature acts on Sanford's proposal.

The museum opened in 1988.
