FLORENCE -- The votes from the state Senate District 30 primary race Tuesday will be recounted by county election commissions next week.

In the race certified Thursday by the election commissions of the four counties represented by District 30 -- Florence, Marion, Dillon and Marlboro -- Florence businessman Tim Norwood came out just six votes ahead of Marion County Deputy Administrator Kent Williams. Incumbent Maggie Glover took first place in the race, but did not garner more than the 50 percent of the vote needed to avoid a runoff.

Because of the slim margin of votes between second and third place, the state Election Commission will send the ballots back to the county election commissions for a recount, S.C. Election Commission spokesman Gary Baum said.

"We're looking to schedule a recount Monday, if needed, at the county election commissions," he said.

Baum said the state commission will meet today and the decision will become official.

"The counties will recount the votes and certify them, then they'll send it to the state election commission for certification, probably Tuesday," Baum said.

Dillon, Florence, Marion and Marlboro counties will get the ballots back Monday. The recount will take place at 10 a.m. in each county.

Races in which there is a margin of victory less than 1 percent require a recount, said Florence County Election Commission director Russell Barrett.

"It falls within the 1 percent," he said, "so I imagine we'll have a recount."

Several ballots in the election were challenged in Marion, so the results from Tuesday's election changed after they were certified by the counties. Glover had 6,207 votes, Norwood had 5,748 and Williams had 5,742.
