South Carolina may soon get a big cut in state taxes. that announcement coming from the Governor today. Right now, the state tax rate is 7-percent... The 'highest' rate in the Southeast..and the 'fifth' highest in the nation.
If the Governor's proposal is passed the tax rate would drop from 7-percent to 4-point- 75 percent. So, what will this new rate mean to you? For starters.. let's say the average family makes $30-thousand a year..
Currently.. they pay $2,250 dollars.. per year. Now.. they would only pay $1,350 per year. A savings of nine-hundred dollars. Governor Mark Sanford says he feel lowering the state income tax is worth the fight..
Governor sanford days, "I feel this is very significant...one of the reasons I think it is so signigicant is highlighted in the metro section of the paper and the loss of another 200 jobs in Duncan S.C. "
The governor says lowering the state income tax would attract more business and create more jobs for South Carolina....he is getting support from both the House and the Senate..
Rep. David Wilkins says, "we will have the bill prepared and ready to go...it will be introduced within the next hour in the House and I predict it will be approved by the full House and sent to the Senate."
Despite the support for the Governor's tax relief plan....many say lowering the state income tax is not a good move.
Rep. James smith says, "we know and the Economist know that this is not in the best interest of South Carolina and hopefully it will not past."
