BILL OF RIGHTS
CELEBRATION AT THE STATE HOUSE
Secretary Miles Will Lead Ceremony
(Columbia)--Secretary of State
Jim Miles will be the keynote speaker and Honorary Chairman
at The Bill of Rights Celebration, marking the second annual
Bill of Rights Day in South Carolina, to be held on
Saturday, December 15, at 11:00 am on the South Side of the
Capitol on Pendleton Street.
“Never before have we felt the empowerment of our Bill of
Rights as we do now in the aftermath of the events of
September 11,” said Secretary Miles. “The beliefs espoused
by the terrorists involved in the recent tragedies are in
direct contrast to the values upheld in The Bill of Rights,
which guarantees fundamental civil and human rights: the
freedoms of speech, press, assembly, and religion;
protections against unreasonable searches and coerced
confessions; rights to counsel and a jury trial.”
The Boy Scouts of America will read The Bill of Rights.
Representatives from the Cities of Greenville, Orangeburg,
and several other cities will read proclamations. In
addition, leaders of the Catawba Indian Nation will
participate in the event and present proclamations.
Entertainment will be provided by the First Baptist Church
Children’s Choir.
The Boy Scout winner of The Bill of Rights essay competition
and the $1,000 savings bond will also be announced. The
public is invited to attend. In the event of inclement
weather, the activities will be held in The State House
Rotunda.
