I helped Katrina Shealy campaign against Jake Knotts. As a former graduate of Columbia Bible College and a former Christian missionary, this current bill is both "unchristian", and not true to historic American principles. My wife and I are currently helping Lutheran services. We have met some of these people. The ones we have met are certainly NOT dangerous including two daughters and a son of Iraqi refugees. In the example I am giving you, the two daughter and son are living in an apartment in Irmo. The parents, (because they have not yet been cleared by our state department) are still waiting in Turkey. The vetting process for the refugee resettlement program is not the responsibility of the non-profit groups. The non-profit groups are simply looking for a way to provide for and love those who find themselves as refugees. The state department vets them, the faith groups are the ones looking to place them in stable places to live and thrive. The point of this bill is to make groups that do this kind of work unable to help refugees because of liability. It's the equivalent to them passing a bill that says if my church feeds the homeless (which we do) and that causes them to travel to our side of the city where they might not normally be on the night that we do dinner (which they do), then we would be liable should they commit a crime. It's not a perfect analogy, but I think you get my point. The state of SC cannot ban refugees from relocating to SC, but this is a backdoor way of trying to ensure that doesn't happen. =========================== About one month ago, I attended the hearing at the Greschem Barret building at the Capital. Things that were said that night before Senators Lee Bright, Katrina Shealy and one other senator were shameful. Basically tirades of hate and fear. And quite frankly the key emotion behind this is FEAR. If you do not understand the real principle behind all of this, then talk to me. I had a German mother and a Filipino father. You of all people should understand the larger picture. Galen Manapat 172.74.217.154
