 | Charleston, SC - Supply warehouses, personnel expenses, and
generator connections in emergency shelters are just some of
the things South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford (website - news) wants in
order to better prepare the state for a hurricane.
State lawmakers have approved
millions to do those things and right now the senate finance
committee is discussing the best way to make all that happen.
Committee member, Senator Larry Grooms, says he's confident
the committee will recommend that $6.2 million go to the state
for the cause. But, he says, there's a problem.
"The debate right now for the full finance
committee is do we fund a staging area to take care of the
needs east of I-95 or do we fund the whole state?"
Grooms says that money would be
enough to prepare shelters east of I-95, but supplying
shelters outside the coastal region would require an
additional $3.8 million.
Neal
Davis, a Lowcountry local, says focusing on the coast is a
smart idea.
"I feel like the
coast should get more attention and more money to prepare for
the hurricanes because we're the ones that are going to be
affected more."
Grooms says plans
about how much money the state will get and where it will go
won't be final until hurricane season begins.
Governor Sanford has asked for up to $10 million
for hurricane preparations, but budget writers have approved
only about half of that so far.
